The Top Five Things Employees Look for in a Workplace Culture

Every business has its own unique workplace culture, but some are more inviting to employees than others. There are five major things new recruits look for, and these help you attract and ultimately keep the right people.

One of the main things job applicants look for is a strong, positive and unique workplace culture. Every workplace is different, but applicants will want to sense a certain 'vibe' and recruiters will want to be assured that an applicant will fit in. So what are the top five things applicants are looking for?

Leaders who listen. Good leadership is perhaps the most important part of any organisation. If you have good leaders, everything else falls into place. Employees really value managers who listen. A culture of open dialogue is one of the important things any company can nurture, because innovation only comes about through people talking and listening.

A sense of purpose. Employees like to feel that their work is meaningful and that everyone is pulling in the same direction. Having a set goal which everyone is working towards means people feel more united, more like a team and a bonded unit than just a series of individuals.

Wellbeing. This has never been so important. Recent surveys have shown that the vast majority of employees want their organisation to take a more active interest in their mental and physical wellbeing. Whether that's offering flexible hours, onsite Pilates classes or healthier canteen options, people value employers who show they care.

Learning and development. Everyone wants career progression, and the fastest route is through training. Employees and applicants want to see there is scope for promotion and a chance to develop their skills. Anything you can offer by way of training will make your organisation more attractive.

Fun. All too often this is far down an employer's list of priorities. Fun is a key factor in appealing to employees and new recruits. Of course people come to an office to work, but nobody feels much like working in a bland, corporate environment. Socials, exciting away-days and creating an open, happy atmosphere should all be on the agenda.

Tick these five boxes, and you'll attract and keep the right people.
