Your HR team represents one of the most important departments within your organisation. HR teams are responsible for all sorts, from the practical things such as payroll to the less tangible things such as creating a workplace culture. It's only by having a good HR department that you'll create the right environment to attract and keep the most talented employees.
So what does an ideal HR team look like? For starters, it needs to be diverse. When you have diversity in your HR department, the rest of the organisation is more likely to mirror that diversity. Diverse backgrounds and opinions drive creativity and innovation, so if you want to grow and develop, you need to start with a diverse HR department doing the recruiting.
You also want your HR department to reflect the size of your organisation. Very small companies with fewer than 50 employees can usually get away with having just one person handling HR. Get to 150 employees, and you should probably consider taking on a second. This is a handy rule of thumb for calculating how big your HR department should be.
In an ideal world, you would have one HR professional who is entirely dedicated to recruitment. Recruiting is a time-consuming business, it's best to have one person focused on it and leave the rest of the team free to work on other tasks. Naturally they would sit in on the interviews, but day-to-day they should be handling administration.
People are the most important asset any organisation has. Build a strong HR team and you'll catch and keep the talent.
