Your eyesight is precious, and you need to take care of it. People who work long hours in an office spend the majority of that time staring at computer screens and smartphones. The glare from screens puts added strain on the eyes and can lead to all sorts of problems, but there are a number of things you can do to help prevent eyesight deterioration.
Firstly, ensure you're taking regular breaks. Eye health experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule. Every twenty minutes you should look away from your computer and stare for twenty seconds at something which is about twenty feet away. This means you're focusing on something long distance as opposed to the screen, which is up close to your face.
The second thing you can do is adjust your computer settings. The screen may be too bright or too dull for comfort, so experiment a bit until you find a happy medium which is kinder to your eyesight. External glare can also be an issue. If your screen is in full sun or under overly bright overhead lights, you may need to draw the blinds or request the lights be put on a dimmer switch.
Finally, adjust your seating. Researchers have found that the optimal distance between your eyes and your computer screen should be between twenty and twenty-eight inches. Any closer than that and you risk damaging your vision.
Some employers offer free eye tests as part of their benefits packages, so if you're concerned your sight is getting worse, it's always worth checking what you're entitled to.
