Being a leader is more than just leading the team, it's about leading with the team; here's how it's done.
Firstly, remember that when leading a team, it is important to know that every individual has something to offer. There will be times that you will have to allow another to step forward. Value and respect them and you'll see your team soaring in no time.
As a leader you need to be able to see the bigger picture and even anticipate challenges before they occur. This skill is invaluable as it allows you to avoid potential problems and to recognise opportunities that are overlooked by others.
Knowing your team's weaknesses as well as their strengths enables you to motivate and inspire them when their morale is low. Encourage them and guide them through it, be the support system that allows you to empower them.
Don't close one eye to problems. Often we see teams falling apart because conflicts are left unresolved. Don't avoid them, instead address them professionally and individually, and get to the core of it. People are bound to bump heads at some point, be prepared.
Listen to understand. Your team will grow faster if everyone is seen as equal. A great leader listens to ideas, feedback, suggestions, and opinions while looking out for non-verbal cues too.
Finally, have a direction. Since you're leading a team, you need to know exactly what your end goals are. If you are directionless, the team will find themselves in the same boat. Plan, organise, anticipate and delegate. Having a direction allows you to move swiftly, and reduces the chances of falling over at hurdles, allowing for faster progress in reaching your goals.
