You only get one chance at a first impression, as the saying goes - if you're meeting someone for the first time, you want to make sure you get it right. You can't always predict how things will go, but if you've done a little planning in advance, it makes the situation less daunting.
You need to come across as warm, easy to get on with and amiable, if you want people to take an instant liking to you. You might be feeling a little nervous, but try never to let the nerves show or display a lack of confidence. That's a tall order, but confidence can be staged and sometimes has to be at an initial meeting.
Try to smile your way through any anxieties. Give a firm handshake and maintain eye contact throughout. You should begin with a friendly introduction, something along the lines of “It's great to finally meet you in person. I'm so pleased to be working with you and thanks for choosing our company”.
You should have a brief summary of your organisation and your role prepared in your head, so you can give them a quick lowdown on everything they need to know. It's important you listen as much as you talk, however. Show a genuine interest in their business and career, asking questions and listening attentively to the answers.
When you wrap up the meeting, reiterate just how much you're looking forward to working together. Let them know you'll be in touch soon, to show your enthusiasm and further cement that new working relationship.
