Why HR Departments Need to Recruit a More Diverse Range of People

Diversity in the workplace has never been such a big issue. In order to recruit people from all backgrounds, there needs to be a culture of inclusivity.

Diversity in the workplace has arguably never been such a hot topic. Hiring people from all walks of life and a wide variety of backgrounds is the key to an organisation's success, and is beneficial for a number of reasons. HR departments have a duty to recruit broadly, in order to ensure their workforce mirrors the world outside the office doors.

One of the main advantages of a diverse workforce is creativity and innovation. People from different backgrounds think in different ways and have a different perspective on the world. When all those ideas and views land in the same melting pot, you often find incredible things come from the mix. Fusing all those ways of thinking leads to something fresh and new, whether it's a marketing campaign, a new product or, indeed, the entire direction of the company.

A diverse workforce also means you appeal to more people and your public perception is boosted. People respect a company which reflects the diversity of the real world, and consumers are more likely to engage with you if they can see themselves mirrored in your organisation.

If you can set up a process of 'blind recruitment', you often end up with both diversity and a more talented team. Hiring blind means you're more open-minded and less susceptible to the unconscious biases we all suffer from. However liberal and open-minded you think you are, everybody passes judgment without even realising it. Going on limited information means you recruit the best candidate for the role.

Diversity equates to success. Hire more widely and you'll see the benefits straight away.
